Overview
The blade does not cut the tape at all. The carton gets sealed but the tape remains attached, creating a long tail on every box. This is caused by a dirty or dull blade, weak spring tension, loose mandrel tension, or a knife arm that does not snap down.
Step 1 — Clean the Blade
A blade covered in tape residue or adhesive will not cut. Cleaning often solves the problem immediately.
Clean the blade:
- Stop the machine and let it cool for 2 minutes.
- Use a cloth or soft brush soaked in a light machine oil.
- Wipe the blade edge gently in one direction (never scrub).
- Wipe away excess oil with a dry cloth.
- Run a test carton to check if cutting resumes.
ℹ️ Daily maintenance: Clean the blade at least twice per shift to prevent buildup.
Step 2 — Replace a Dull Blade
If cleaning does not restore cutting, the blade is worn out and must be replaced.
Replace the blade:
- Remove the old blade (turn the screw counterclockwise).
- Install a new blade of the same part number.
- Tighten snugly but do not over-tighten (it may crack).
- Test with a carton.
⚠️ Critical: Always use OEM blades. Aftermarket or generic blades will not cut cleanly and may damage the blade holder.
Step 3 — Lubricate and Free the Knife Harness Arm
If the knife arm does not snap down to cut, the blade cannot reach the tape.
Free the arm:
- Apply a light machine oil or grease to the pivot point of the knife harness arm.
- Move the arm by hand up and down several times to distribute lubricant.
- The arm should snap down quickly and return smoothly.
- Look for bent metal, dried tape, or dirt blocking movement. Clean or straighten.
If the arm still will not snap:
- The spring may be weak. Lubricate it first; if no improvement, replace it.
- Visually inspect for cracks or breaks in the arm or bracket. Replace if damaged.
Step 4 — Increase Mandrel Tension
If the tape roll spins too freely on the mandrel, the blade cannot hold the tape steady for cutting.
Adjust mandrel tension:
- Locate the washer and tension screw at the end of the mandrel.
- Turn the screw clockwise one quarter-turn.
- Try to spin the tape roll by hand. It should not spin freely.
- If it still spins, tighten further in small increments.
📋 Note: Over-tightening can damage the mandrel. Tighten just enough so the roll does not slip during cutting.
