Overview
Tape wraps around the front application roller when the clutch inside the front application arm fails. The roller cannot grip or hold the tape, so tape winds around instead of applying cleanly to the carton.
Step 1 — Inspect the Front Application Clutch
The clutch is a one-way mechanism that grips the tape and applies it. If it slips or fails, tape cannot be held and will wrap around the roller instead.
Visual inspection:
- Look at the front application arm where it pivots near the front roller.
- Manually try to move the roller backward (against normal direction). There should be strong resistance or no movement at all.
- If the roller spins freely backward, the clutch is broken.
Step 2 — Replace Worn Clutch Components
If the clutch is damaged, one or more of the internal parts must be replaced. Order the parts below for 2" or 3" tapeheads as needed.

⚠️ Important: Make sure you order parts for your tapehead size (2" or 3"). Using mismatched parts will cause the same problem to recur.
Maintenance Tips
- Check for tape wrapping at the start of each shift—it indicates clutch failure.
- Replace the roller assembly if tape wrapping occurs repeatedly.
- Keep the front application arm clean and free of dried tape that could jam the clutch.
