Overview
This guide provides detailed step-by-step instructions for every maintenance task on the tape head. Follow these procedures at the frequency listed (every shift, weekly, or monthly) to keep your tapehead running smoothly and prevent problems.
Step 1 — Clean Adhesive Residue on the Blade (Every Shift)
Tools needed: Clean cloth or soft brush, WD-40 or light machine oil, dry cloth
Procedure:
- Stop the machine and allow it to cool for 2 minutes.
- Inspect the blade edge for tape residue or dried adhesive buildup.
- Pour a small amount of WD-40 or machine oil onto a clean cloth.
- Gently wipe the blade edge in one direction only—never scrub back and forth.
- Use a dry cloth to wipe away excess oil.
- Visually inspect the blade. It should look shiny and sharp, not dull or rounded.
- Run one test carton to confirm cutting resumed.
What to look for: If cleaning does not restore sharp cutting, the blade is dull and must be replaced.
Step 2 — Apply Oil to the Blade Guard (Every Shift)
Tools needed: Light machine oil, small brush or cloth
Procedure:
- Locate the blade guard—the metal or plastic shield covering the blade.
- Apply a thin coat of light machine oil to the interior surface of the guard using a small brush or cloth.
- Do not over-oil; a thin coat is enough.
- This prevents adhesive from sticking to the blade between cleaning cycles.
Step 3 — Inspect All Flat Head Screws (Weekly)
Tools needed: Set of hex wrenches (Allen keys)
Procedure:
- Visually scan the entire tape head assembly for all flat-head (socket head) screws.
- Common locations: blade holder, roller shafts, arm pivots, main spring bracket.
- Using the correct-size hex wrench, gently turn each screw clockwise to tighten.
- Tighten only until snug—do not use excessive force or the screw head will strip or crack plastic parts.
- If a screw is missing, replace it immediately with a screw of the same size and length.
What to watch for: Loose screws can cause parts to rattle, shift, or fail. A loose blade holder will produce uneven cutting.
Step 4 — Check for Internal Interference (Weekly)
Tools needed: Flashlight, small brush or compressed air, screwdriver (if needed for blade guard removal)
Procedure:
- Use a flashlight to look inside the tape head assembly.
- Look for dried tape, adhesive lumps, or dirt blocking the tape path.
- Check around rollers, springs, and arm pivots.
- If you see dried tape, use a soft brush to gently scrape it away.
- Blow out loose debris with compressed air (low pressure—not over 40 PSI).
- Look for bent metal parts, cracked plastic, or loose components. Mark any damage for repair.
When to call for repairs: If you find bent metal or cracked plastic, do not force it back into shape. Tag the machine and contact maintenance.
Step 5 — Inspect and Adjust Mandrel Tension (Weekly)
Tools needed: Wrench (size depends on mandrel design)
Procedure:
- Locate the tension washer and adjustment screw at the end of the mandrel (tape roll shaft).
- By hand, try to spin the tape roll. It should not spin freely.
- If the roll spins easily, tighten the washer by turning the screw clockwise one quarter-turn.
- Try again. The roll should have firm resistance to hand rotation.
- If still too loose, tighten another quarter-turn and test.
Step 6 — Verify Optimizing Arm Roller Spins Freely (Weekly)
Tools needed: Light machine oil
Procedure:
- Locate the curved optimizing arm and the small roller at its end.
- Spin the roller by hand. It should rotate smoothly with no grinding sound or stiffness.
- If the roller is stiff or sticky, apply a drop of light machine oil to the shaft on both sides.
- Spin the roller again to distribute the oil.
- Wipe away excess oil with a clean cloth.
Step 7 — Test One-Way Roller Function (Weekly)
Tools needed: None
Procedure:
- Locate the one-way roller in the tape path (typically between the mandrel and idle roller).
- Spin it by hand in the forward direction (the direction tape normally travels). It should rotate freely and smoothly.
- Try to spin it backward (opposite direction). The roller should NOT spin backward—this is the one-way clutch working.
- If the roller spins freely in both directions, the clutch has failed.
Step 8 — Check Idle Roller and Knurled Roller (Weekly)
Tools needed: Light machine oil
Procedure:
Idle Roller:
- Locate the idle roller in the tape path.
- Spin it by hand. It should rotate smoothly with no resistance.
- If stiff, apply a drop of light machine oil to each shaft end.
- Spin again to distribute oil and wipe excess away.
Knurled Roller:
- Locate the knurled (dimpled) roller near the front application arm.
- Spin it by hand. It should rotate smoothly.
- Inspect the dimpled surface. It should have visible texture, not worn smooth.
- If the knurls are worn flat, the roller has lost grip and must be replaced.
Step 9 — Test Front Application Roller Clutch (Weekly)
Tools needed: None
Procedure:
- Locate the front application roller with the clutch mechanism.
- Try to spin the roller by hand in the normal forward direction. It may or may not spin freely (depends on design).
- Now try to spin it backward. There should be strong resistance or no movement—the clutch should lock backward.
- If the roller spins freely backward, the clutch has failed.
Step 10 — Verify Rear Roller Spins Freely (Weekly)
Tools needed: Light machine oil
Procedure:
- Locate the rear roller arm and its roller.
- Spin the roller by hand. It should rotate smoothly in both directions.
- If stiff, apply a drop of light machine oil to each shaft end.
- Spin again and wipe away excess oil.
Step 11 — Clean and Blow Springs (Weekly)
Tools needed: Compressed air (low pressure, 30–40 PSI), soft brush
Procedure:
- Locate the main spring (large coil spring) and knife harness spring.
- Use a soft brush to remove loose dust and debris from the coils.
- Use compressed air (low pressure) to blow out dust from hard-to-reach areas.
- Visually inspect both springs for rust, cracks, or deformation.
- If you see rust, gently brush it away with a stainless steel brush and apply a light coat of WD-40.
Step 12 — Test Tape Erect Plate Function (Weekly)
Tools needed: None
Procedure:
- Locate the tape erect plate (hinged plate near the top of the tape path).
- Manually pull the plate upward with moderate force.
- It should snap back down quickly and firmly—this snap is the spring working.
- If it moves slowly or does not snap back at all, the spring is weak.
- If the plate feels stuck or grinding, look for dried tape or debris blocking movement.
If slow snap: Clean away any dried tape or debris. If snap does not improve, replace the spring.
Monthly Deep Maintenance
Complete Clean and Lubricate All Pivot Points
Tools needed: WD-40 or acetone, soft cloth, light machine oil, soft brush
- Remove dried tape and adhesive residue from all surfaces using WD-40 and a cloth. For stubborn residue, use acetone sparingly (do not soak plastic parts).
- Wipe all surfaces dry.
- Apply a light coat of machine oil to all pivot points on the arms (optimizing arm, rear arm, knife harness).
- Work each arm by hand several times to distribute oil through the joint.
- Wipe away excess oil with a clean, dry cloth.
Inspect Blade for Wear
- Remove the blade from its holder if possible (follow the machine's manual for your model).
- Hold the blade under a bright light and look at the cutting edge.
- A sharp blade appears shiny and thin at the edge.
- A dull blade edge looks thick, rounded, or flat.
- If dull, replace the blade with a new one of the same part number.
Check Spring Tension Baseline
- Record the current spring tension setting (note the position of the adjustment dial or screw).
- This becomes your baseline.
- During the month, if tape cutting becomes difficult, compare the current setting to this baseline.
- If the dial has moved or loosened, the spring has lost tension and must be replaced.
