Changing a vacuum pump on an ELVS is a common maintenance task. This guide provides a step-by-step process to safely and effectively replace the pump.
Safety First ⚠️
Step 1: Before starting any maintenance, you must ensure the machine is completely de-energized to prevent accidental startup. First, press the emergency stop button on the machine. Next, unplug the machine from its power source. Always follow your company’s specific safety standards, especially those related to Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures, to guarantee the machine cannot be powered on while you're working on it.
Removing the Old Vacuum Pump
Step 2: Locate the plate on which the vacuum pump is mounted. There are typically three bolts securing this plate to the machine's frame. Use a socket wrench or an appropriate tool to remove the three bolts from the bottom of the plate.
Step 3: The vacuum hose is attached to the vacuum pump with a hose clamp. Use a screwdriver or a socket wrench to loosen the hose clamp and carefully disconnect the hose from the pump. Be cautious not to lose the hose clamp once it's loosened, as you will need it for the new pump.
Step 4: The vacuum pump is wired to the machine's electrical system. Locate the electrical box and open it. Before unwiring anything, it is crucial to take a photo of the current wiring configuration. This photo will serve as a reference to ensure you can correctly re-wire the new pump. Once you have a photo, carefully unwire the electrical cables from the pump.
Step 5: The electrical cord for the pump passes through a cord gripper on the side of the electrical box. Loosen the cord gripper and pull the electrical cord through it. With the electrical and vacuum connections disconnected, you can now remove the old vacuum pump from the mounting plate.
Installing the New Pump
Step 6: To install the new vacuum pump, simply follow the previous steps in reverse.
- First, place the new vacuum pump on the mounting plate and secure it using the bolts from Step 2.
- Next, feed the electrical cord through the cord gripper and into the electrical box. Use your reference photo to wire the new pump exactly as the old one was wired.
- Attach the vacuum hose to the new pump and secure it with the hose clamp from Step 3.
- Once all connections are made, you can fill the new pump with the appropriate vacuum pump oil as specified by the manufacturer.
Final Steps and Testing
Step 7: With all connections secure and the oil level correct, you can now reconnect the machine to power and deactivate the emergency stop. Power on the machine and test the vacuum system. Listen for any unusual noises and check for leaks at the hose connections. If everything checks out, the pump replacement is complete.
