Introduction
‘Dropping a box’ is common phrase that is used to loosely describe several issues associated with the ELVS Carton Erector. Understanding the issues and differences in the process can mean the difference between quickly identifying and solving the problem and incurring an expensive service call due to poor description.
The box pickup, retraction and forming is one of the more complex processes in packaging. On the ELVS, the process starts with the Pickup arm advancing to the suction cups to meet the stack. Once the Pickup Prox Detects the box stack, suction is applied to the box, and the pickup arm retracts. As the Pickup arm retracts, the box is opened, separated from the stack, and formed square.
Observation
The ELVS machine can drop a box for many reasons, but paying close attention to when the point of failure occurs during the process can help direct troubleshooting effort effectively. ' Failure-to- Pickup' usually happens when there isn’t proper suction, and the pickup arm cannot pull the box away from the stack. The Pickup arm will retract and break suction with the box, while the box is still partially pinned to the stack. ‘Failure to Open’ occurs when the box is successfully pulled away from the stack but remains closed during forming. If the box is still closed when forming starts, the flat box will fold in half and break suction.
