Overview
If your vacuum pump is producing loud noise, leaking oil, or emitting smoke, it is likely due to a misaligned or detached oil filter. When the oil filter is not properly seated or has fallen off its mount, the oil may bypass the filter, causing burning oil (smoke), increased noise, and oil leakage.
This article provides detailed steps to inspect and correct the oil filter alignment to restore normal pump operation.
Possible Cause and Corrective Action
| Possible Cause | Corrective Action |
|---|---|
| Oil filter misaligned or detached from mount | Realign or reattach the oil filter securely to its bracket. |
| Oil overfilled beyond the max line | Drain excess oil until it reaches the maximum level indicator. |
| Oil filter bracket loose or damaged | Tighten or replace the bracket as needed to secure the filter. |
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide
Step 1: Locate the Cover
Locate the black plastic cover on the end of the vacuum pump. This cover houses the oil filter and bracket assembly.
Step 2: Remove the Cover
Use the appropriate screwdriver to remove the five screws holding the cover in place. Set the screws aside in a safe location.
Step 3: Inspect the Oil Filter and Bracket
Once the cover is removed, inspect the oil filter and the bracket that holds it in position.
If the filter has fallen off or is out of alignment, it will need to be repositioned.
Ensure the filter sits flush and secure on its mount.
Step 4: Reinstall the Oil Filter
If the filter is not properly mounted:
Reinsert it correctly as shown in the equipment reference guide or image provided.
Make sure it’s firmly seated on the mount and not loose.
Step 5: Check Oil Level
Inspect the oil level using the sight glass.
The oil should not exceed the maximum fill line.
If overfilled, drain the excess oil, as this can cause smoke during operation.
Step 6: Reassemble the Cover
Once the filter is secure and the oil level is correct:
Replace the black cover.
Reinstall the five screws and tighten them evenly to secure the cover in place.
Step 7: Test the Vacuum Pump
Power on the vacuum pump and observe its operation:
Confirm that there is no smoke.
Listen for reduced noise levels.
Check that there are no oil leaks around the cover or mounting area.
