Overview
Regular preventive maintenance keeps the tape head running smoothly and prevents common problems like blade dulling, tape jams, and spring failure. Follow this checklist weekly or at shift changes to ensure optimal performance.
Daily Maintenance (Every Shift)
Clean Adhesive Residue on the Blade
- Use a clean cloth and WD-40 or light machine oil to clean the blade after every shift.
- Wipe gently in one direction; do not scrub.
- Remove excess oil with a dry cloth.
⚠️ Safety reminder: Blades are very sharp and should be handled with care.
Apply Oil to the Blade Guard
- Apply a light coat of machine oil to the blade guard to prevent adhesive from sticking to the blade.
- This keeps the blade clean and reduces buildup.
Weekly Maintenance
Inspect All Flat Head Screws
- Check all flat-head (socket head) screws on the tape head assembly.
- Ensure they are correctly tightened using the appropriate hex wrench.
- Do not over-tighten; this can crack plastic parts or strip threads.
Check for Any Internal Interference of Objects
- Look inside the tape head for dried tape, debris, or bent metal that could jam moving parts.
- Remove any foreign objects.
- Straighten or replace any bent components.
Inspect ALL Rollers for Smooth Operation
Adjust Mandrel to a Suitable Tension
- Turn the tension washer at the end of the mandrel clockwise until the tape roll cannot spin freely by hand.
- The roll should have slight resistance—not locked, but not loose.
Verify Optimizing Arm Roller Spins Freely
- Spin the roller on the optimizing arm by hand. It should rotate smoothly with no grinding or stiffness.
- If stiff, apply a light machine oil to the shaft.
One-Way Roller
- Verify it rotates smoothly in one direction.
- It should not rotate in the opposite direction (this is the one-way mechanism working).
- If it spins both ways, the clutch is broken and must be replaced.
Ensure Idle Roller Spins Freely
- Spin the idle roller. It should rotate smoothly.
- If stiff or stuck, apply light machine oil to the bearing.
Check Knurled Roller Rotates Smoothly
- The knurled roller should spin freely and have no flat spots or damage to the dimpled surface.
- If the knurls are worn smooth, replace the roller.
Front Application Roller with a Clutch
- Should not spin freely backward. Manually try to spin it backward—there should be strong resistance or no movement.
- If it spins freely both directions, the clutch has failed and must be replaced.
Verify Rear Roller Spins Freely
- The rear roller should spin smoothly in both directions.
- If stiff, apply a light machine oil to the shaft.
Clean / Blow the Springs with Compressed Air
- Use compressed air (low pressure) to blow dust and debris from the main spring and knife harness springs.
- Look for signs of rust, cracks, or deformation on the springs.
- If a spring appears damaged or weak, it must be replaced.
Check Functionality of Tape Erected Plate
- Manually pull the tape erect plate upward. It should snap back down quickly with force.
- If it moves slowly or does not snap back, the spring is weak or the plate is blocked.
- Clean the plate and surrounding area of dried tape. If snapping does not improve, replace the spring.
Monthly Maintenance
Deep Clean All Components
- Remove dried tape and adhesive residue from all surfaces using WD-40 or acetone and a soft cloth.
- Do not soak plastic parts in acetone; use acetone sparingly.
Lubricate All Pivot Points
- Apply a light machine oil to all pivot points on the arms (optimizing arm, rear arm, knife harness).
- Work the arm by hand several times to distribute oil.
- Wipe away excess oil.
Inspect Blade for Wear
- Look at the blade edge under a light. It should appear sharp and shiny.
- If the edge looks rounded or dull, replace the blade.
Check Spring Tension
- Record the current spring tension setting.
- If tape cutting has become difficult or inconsistent, the spring may have weakened. Compare to your baseline.
- Replace springs that show loss of tension.
